Working In Excel's Page Layout View
Added to Excel with the 2007 release, Page Layout View offers a quick and easy way for users to add, edit, and delete headers and footers and to visualize exactly how a worksheet appears relative to both horizontal and vertical rulers. To enable Page Layout View, click the Page Layout View icon in the lower, right-hand corner of the Excel window, as shown in Figure 1. You can also enable Page Layout View by clicking View, Page Layout View from the Ribbon.

As shown in Figure 2, while working in Page Layout View, users have access to virtually all Excel functions; further, most users will find it easier to perform certain tasks. For instance, in Page Layout View, most users will find the following tasks easier to perform:

  • Gauging the physical dimensions of a worksheet by viewing both the horizontal and vertical rulers in the worksheet,
  • Adjusting margins by simply clicking and dragging between the shaded areas on the rulers,
  • Creating headers and footers by simply clicking and typing in the appropriate locations, as opposed to opening the Page Layout dialog box,
  • Visualizing the impact of any changes made to the worksheet from the Page Layout tab of the Ribbon.

Users may apply Page Layout View on a worksheet-by-worksheet basis.

Perhaps the only potential downside of working in Page Layout View is that some users may notice performance degradation when working on very large worksheets. Nonetheless, if you have not yet discovered Page Layout View, now would be a great time to get to know this unheralded feature in Excel.
