Gaining Better Insight With The QuickBooks Company Snapshot
One of the improved features in QuickBooks 2010 is the Company Snapshot. The Company Snapshot originated in the 2009 release of QuickBooks, but in that release, offered only limited customization and graphical reporting options. In the 2010 release of QuickBooks, Intuit significantly improved the Company Snapshot by enhancing the graphics and expanding customization options. Shown below in Figure 1, the Company Snapshot provides QuickBooks Pro, Premier, and Enterprise Solutions users with a high-level overview of company performance in selected areas; the Company Snapshot is also available in QuickBooks for the Mac.

By default, the Company Snapshot presents seven metrics:

  1. Income and Expense Trend,
  2. Previous Year Income Comparison,
  3. Customers Who Owe Money,
  4. Account Balances,
  5. Top Customers by Sales,
  6. Previous Year Expense Comparison, and
  7. Expense Breakdown.

Customization options include the ability to remove any of the seven default metrics, the ability to add up to five additional metrics, the ability to rearrange the layout of the metrics presented, and the ability to customize which accounts appear in the Account Balances metric. Additionally, for all metrics, users can self-select the date periods shown.

To add or remove metrics from the Company Snapshot, select Add Content from the upper, left-hand corner of the window. To add a metric, click the Add button, as highlighted in Figure 2.

To delete a metric, click the "X" in the title bar of the metric you desire to delete. And to change the location of a metric, simply click and drag on the title, releasing your mouse-click once the metric is in the desired location.

For those QuickBooks users who have difficulty understanding the real meaning of the numbers behind traditional financial and operational statements, using the Company Snapshot can enhance their understanding of an organization's financial and operational performance.
